Identifying Your Skin Type

The beauty industry is positively overflowing with products for your skin's every need and concern. Unfortunately, we know all too well that one person's holy grail product might not have the same result in another's skin, and it all comes down to skin type! Being familiar with your skin type and knowing your skin needs is a must if you want to live up to your best-skin potential and avoid investing in products that aren't right for you.

With the shift of seasons, your skin is likely going through some changes as well. Your skin type might completely change between fall and winter. Because not everyone's skin type is evident, today, we're exploring the different types and helping you pinpoint yours accordingly!

Normal

If you've never thought twice about your skin type, there's a good chance you fall into the normal skin type category. Those with normal skin don't experience frequent breakouts, reactions to new products, or notice changes in their skin throughout the seasons.

Having a normal skin type means you can go one of two ways: either keep a low-key, simple routine since your skin maintains itself for the most part, or play around with ALL the products because you can. (It's no surprise that we fully endorse the latter option.)

What to use:

White Marble Dual Phase Vitamin C Peel, mix and match a Double Cleanse of your choice, Phelityl Day Lotion SPF 15Phelityl Night Cream

Oily

'Shiny' and 'perpetually glowing' are two terms oily-skinned people tend to use when describing the state of their skin. Blotting your face upon arriving to work is an essential part of your summer routine, and makeup seems to disappear faster than you'd like it to.

Moisturizing is still super important as an oily person since a dry face will cause your pores to produce even more oil to compensate. Exfoliating regularly and using an oil-free moisturizer is the way to go.

What to use:

Refreshing Double CleanseLight Controling TonerHydra-Therapy Boost Serum (this can be used in place of a daytime moisturizer in warmer months), Phelityl Day Lotion SPF 15 (use this in winter months), and Phelityl Night Cream

Dehydrated and Dry

Although dryness and dehydration aren't identical skin issues, the results are similar and require the same treatment route for the most part. The difference between dry and dehydrated skin is dry skin results when you don't produce enough oil, whereas dehydrated skin doesn't retain enough water. Dry skin can appear flaky or itchy, while dehydrated skin feels tight and papery.

Both skin types need a moisturizer that locks in hydration and may require multiple layers applied throughout the day. Keeping a humidifier in your room will help. Don't forget that it's extra essential for dry skin types to stay hydrated!

What to use:

Our entire Dry Skin Collection locks in moisture and leaves you with smooth extra glowy skin.

Combination

Combination skin types will see symptoms of both dry and oily skin. Generally, the oily spots are confined to the t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) while the cheeks and the rest of the face are normal to dry.

Keeping your skin balanced is the goal here; this usually requires spot treating dry zones with a solid moisturizer and using a balancing toner to even out your face as much as possible.

Sensitive

You know that you have sensitive skin if you've ever tried a new product and had an immediate reaction to it (whether it be breaking out, dry patches, a rash, or an adverse reaction).

Avoiding products with fragrance and specific ingredients that might set you off is key to catering to your sensitive skin. Also, steering clear of alcohol and selecting products labeled for sensitive skin is an excellent place to start. Even still, that might not be enough. We always recommend consulting with your dermatologist before introducing a new product into your routine, especially for those with sensitive skin.

What to use:

Our Hydra-Therapy Cleansing DuoHydraphel Skin Supplement, Hydra-Therapy Memory Sleep Mask. Our entire Sensitive Skin Collection is gentle on your skin and effectively treats your skin concerns.

Acne-Prone

Frequent breakouts across your face are a tell-tale sign that you have acne-prone skin and are likely indicators that you're susceptible to clogged pores. People with dry and oily skin can also fit into this category.

Acne-prone people should select products geared towards exfoliation and acne prevention (but make sure they're gentle enough on your skin). Keep an eye out for acne-treating ingredients like salicylic acid, clay, benzoyl peroxide, or retinol.

What to use:

Our Detox Cleansing Duo. Our Acne-Prone Skin Collection will treat any blemish you may have as well as help prevent future breakouts.
